Sharon Stone launches HIV/AIDS campaign
JAKARTA: Actress Sharon Stone has embarked on a fundraising initiative that will help improve treatments, care and the quality of life for children living with HIV/AIDS in Asia.
Stone is global fundraising chairperson for amfAR, one of the world’s leading nonprofit foundations for AIDS research. The initiative will support amfAR’s existing TREAT Asia (Therapeutics Research, Education and AIDS Training in Asia) Pediatric program, which was founded in 2005.
The initiative coordinates the efforts and pools the resources of healthcare professionals and researchers at sites in Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.
“Pediatricians must grapple with complex questions, such as when to initiate treatment, which drugs to use and at which dosages, and when to switch regimens to avoid side effects or treatment failure,” Sharon Stone said in a statement made available for The Jakarta Post.
“I see a desperate need for children with HIV/AIDS to receive proper antiretroviral treatment as well as psychosocial care. These funds will allow healthcare workers to address all aspects of their young patients’ lives as they confront HIV/AIDS.”
