As a result of their amfAR funding, the first nine Mathilde Krim Research Fellows have published some outstanding findings in leading scientific journals. Today, amfAR released a new request for proposals that seeks to support the cutting-edge work of a new group of exceptional young HIV/AIDS researchers. Dr. Ivan D'Orso, a rising star at the University of California and an inaugural Krim Fellow, is studying the function and interactions of some key HIV proteins. Dr. Rowena Johnston, amfAR's vice president and director of research, talked with Dr. D'Orso about his work and what he hopes to accomplish.

At the heart of this crisis is a lack of information about the scope of the epidemic among Asian MSM and about which models of HIV prevention and care would be most effective for MSM--a gap that points to the urgent need for more research into this rapidly growing problem. "WHEN YOU'RE lost, find yourself in the service of others."
That is the eternal sex bomb, underrated actress and ongoing humanitarian Sharon Stone, quoting Gandhi.
Stone has raised millions for amfAR with her legendary auctioneering powers, but she is involved in a number of other charities, including Planet Hope, co-founded with her sister, Kelly, and also "Homeless Not Toothless"--a nonprofit organization that provides homeless patients and foster children with free dental care. Brentwood dentist Dr. Jay Grossman started this up.
Sharon filmed a PSA for HNT, which can be seen on the www.homelessnottoothless.org Website. The glamorous star makes her pitch with her hair pulled into a ponytail and no make-up. But tonight, at the Shangri La Hotel in Santa Monica, Miss Stone will look every inch her image. She'll be honored for her work with HNT. The writer Antwone Fisher, who grew up in foster care, is also being honored. William Macy presents Sharon her award; producer Todd Black does the same for Fisher.
P.S. But just because Sharon performs good deeds in a naughty world, doesn't mean she's opted out of capitalizing on her most negotiable assets for old-fashioned, sexy movie queen publicity. She recently did a photo shoot for Paris Match, decked out in a black leather dominatrix corset and high heels, her perky 51-year-old bosoms naked for the world to see. Of course, this could be seen as a good deed too!
TILDA SWINTON is the super-talented Oscar-winning actress who has made her name in indie and art house films, but her Oscar win came from the mainstream movie "Michael Clayton," starring George Clooney.
I don't associate Tilda, who is tall and pale and unique looking, with wacky, high-style comedy, although I admit I haven't seen all of her films. But the Italian director Luca Guadagnino sees those qualities in her. In fact, Luca, who directed Tilda in the coming feature "I Am Love," thinks his star would be perfect in a modern update on the 1958 classic "Auntie Mame."
That's right. Tilda wants to tackle a role that Roz Russell put her indelible stamp upon, on stage and screen.
In case you are too young to remember, "Auntie Mame" was first a best-selling book, written by Patrick Dennis. (The author insisted the plot -- a 10-year-old orphan who goes to live with his madcap aunt, Mame -- was slightly autobiographical.) The book became a smash hit Broadway play. Then a smash hit movie. Then a smash hit Jerry Herman Broadway musical starring Angela Lansbury. And then ... well, best to remember Lucille Ball as Lucy Ricardo, not Mame Dennis.
I say to Tilda why not give it a go? For those who complain about great movies being re-made, almost always in an inferior fashion, it's not like the original is being physically destroyed, you know. Anyway, this idea is as yet only an idea, floated by director Luca, who is imploring Warner Bros., to free the rights and allow Tilda to utter the immortal credo of Auntie Mame: "Life's a banquet and most poor suckers are starving to death!"
They bring back Hamlet all the time, why not Mame?
J. RANDY TARABORRELLI'S new bio of Marilyn Monroe is already on the bestseller lists. No surprise. Every book this guy has written since "Call Her Miss Ross" in 1989 has achieved bestseller-dom. He has put an undeniable stamp on the celeb-bio biz.
So, in "The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe" do we find out anything "new" about a woman who has been dead for 47 years, and the subject of at least a hundred biographies? Well, Taraborrelli makes a compelling case for Marilyn's mental condition being far worse than anybody ever knew, but I think anybody who ever knew Monroe, and who has spoken to previous biographers, already made that case.
Monroe, given to huge mood swings, would be diagnosed today as suffering from manic depression. It is a miracle she lasted as long as she did. (Arthur Miller would aptly use the word "heroic" to describe Marilyn's achievements in the face of her demons.) Randy also delves into the close, unusual friendship between Marilyn and Pat Lawford, sister of JFK.
Taraborrelli avoids the Byzantine conspiracy theories around Monroe's death -- frightened Kennedys, malicious Mafia, black-mailing FBI, jealous housekeepers and obsessed doctors -- and settles on suicide, which is probably correct. If she changed her mind as she slipped under, we'll never know. (It was surely a sudden impulse -- she wasn't planning her death on that hot Saturday night; she had meetings with producers and directors scheduled for Monday.)
As with all the other books, people will take away what they want from this one. Monroe -- so secretive, such a fantasist -- is beyond conventional biography. Norman Mailer recognized that back in 1973, and I think his books on her, a mix of fact and "factoids" actually struck the right note. (All her fans really want are more photo books!)
Like Monroe's last major biographer, Donald Spoto, Taraborrelli insists that Marilyn enjoyed only one casual night with President Kennedy, and nothing at all intimate with his brother, Bobby; that the latter relationship was simply Bobby trying to soothe Monroe, platonically. (JFK had decided too many rumors were flying in the wake of Marilyn's infamous "Happy Birthday" serenade, and he wished to break off all contact.)
Well, I can't cite my source, but it is impeccable. So this is what I know -- it was more than once with JFK, and not at all platonic with brother Bobby. Of course, that is not a very nice story, and doesn't speak well of any of the participants. But ... nobody's perfect.
NOTHING TICKLES me like a true anecdote about a famous person, so here's one I heard last weekend. Many years ago, the great ballerina Margot Fonteyn came out of retirement to dance with Rudolf Nureyev. She was much loved, very ladylike, and not a diva.
At a party in honor of her greatness, someone asked her: "Dame Margot ... do you still get up early every morning to do the barre?"
She sighed: "Yes, yes, every single morning since I was a child, I am at the barre for two hours, even now. You know, in my next life I want to be like Shirley Temple -- Work like hell until the age of seven -- then coast!" http://www.homelessnottoothless.org/

Activating HIV Help Destroy It For Good?
Most efforts to stop HIV from spreading within the body are aimed at limiting its ability to make copies of itself. But some scientists--including two amfAR-funded researchers--are doing exactly the opposite: activating latent virus that hides beyond the reach of antiretroviral drugs. This novel strategy could flush out the last stubborn remnants of the virus, which persist even in people who have been treated successfully.

Light for Rights: World AIDS Day 2009
