Sharon Stone, Natalie Portman and Cannes jury presidents the Coen brothers will host a star-studded AIDS fundraising gala on the sidelines of next month’s glamorous French film festival, organisers said yesterday.
The annual bash organised by the Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) will take place on May 21 at the luxury Eden Roc hotel in Antibes, a town down the road from Cannes.
Hollywood star and Cannes jury member Jake Gyllenhaal will also be in attendance along with actresses Milla Jovovich, Diane Kruger, Isabella Rossellini, and Formula One racing champion Lewis Hamilton.
American singer Mary J. Blige and rockers Imagine Dragons will perform at the glittering event.
The gala, one of the top social events in the European diary, raised a record US$35 million (RM124.6 million) last year and was attended by the likes of Marion Cotillard, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, John Travolta, Kylie Minogue and Gael Garcia Bernal.
A table for 10 went for ?120,000 and guests could buy their napkin rings for around ?3,000.
AmfAR supports HIV research, prevention, treatment, education and the advocacy of AIDS-related public policy.

Cannes Report: Sharon Stone AWOL from amFAR, Sylvester Stallone Shows His Paintings (Including One of Michael Jackson)
Here’s the report from Cannes, where I am not in attendance this year but hearing a lot from everyone: Sharon Stone will not be at Thursday’s amFAR annual snake dance for Eurotrash in Antibes. Stone has an on again, off again relationship with the amFARians.
This year, her absence is explained by a movie shoot in Los Angeles for a film called “Mother’s Day,” a series of vignettes with Susan Sarandon, Laura Dern, and Christina Ricci. I’m told Natalie Portman was supposed to take her place at the auction podium, but she probably won’t stay as long as Thursday because her film didn’t get great reviews. Cate Blanchett may be persuaded to participate as her film, “Carol,” opens tonight.
